Shotokan Karate Ryu

Shotokan Karate Ryu
What is known is that Dharma, a monk from India, was staying at a Shao Lin monastery in China where he taught his students a physical training discipline in order to build strength, endurance and self-defence. This was required to carry out the rigid discipline that was part of their religion and also to protect them from the bandits that lived in their locality. This martial art was 'imported' into Okinawa and was blended with the local fighting techniques of the islands.

The Shotokan Karate Ryu was established in 2003 and since then it has been our mission to teach the art of Traditional Karate in Bishops Stortford and Stansted. Chief Instructor Sensei Michael Ring (5th Dan), is a Senior English Karate-ka recognised in 2010 for his expertise in, and outstanding contribution to, the art of Karate-do. He is also a senior policy advisor in Government.

Sensei Donna Ring (4th Dan), the Chief Instructor of Juniors, is a former Expert Witness with the Forensic Science Service and responsible for developing the revolutionary Tiger Tots programme for teaching Karate to 4-6 year olds. Today, we are the largest Karate School in the area with over 30 Black belts and over 200 licensed students.
