Wight Architecture was appointed to design and manage the modernisation and refurbishment of this penthouse on the roof of Fort Albert. The property suffered from severe damp penetration and basic services. The tower was only accessible via a ladder passing through rough holes cut in the intermediate concrete floors. We designed and constructed a new master bedroom suite on the roof of the living room, curved to blend in with the existing structure, which was originally designed to accommodate a rotating gun. The existing building was stripped back to the bare bones, tanked to prevent damp and insulated to current standards. Underfloor heating was fitted throughout, along with new power and lighting. The heavily articulated radial structure of the living room ceiling has been revealed and left exposed as it tells the story of the building and adds dynamic visual interest to the space.
