White Chapel Art Plaster

White Chapel Art Plaster
The long awaited reopening of Manchester's Whitworth Art Gallery was on Saturday 14th February and did not disappoint. Whitechapel Art Plaster worked closely with ISG, the main management contractor on site and also the City of Manchester's heritage department. Whitechapel Art Plaster created the hand crafted, run in situ, plaster cornice shown in the image above.

We are a fibrous plastering company based in Cheshire but only 6 miles from Manchester city centre. Manchester became the first city in the world to embrace machine-driven mass production during the industrial revolution. The Royal Exchange shown below, which is now a theatre and shopping complex was originally built to serve the Lancashire cotton industry. The walls and ceilings of the building interior shown above are embellished with ornamental plaster work produced using fibrous plastering techniques.

The image below shows a large plaster cornice within the Exchange which was scaffolded to allow White Chapel Art Plaster access so that repairs could be carried out to plaster mouldings and adjacent plain-faced soffits damaged by water ingress. The White Chapel Art Plaster workshop is situated in a converted cotton mill on the banks of the Tame. The river flows swiftly by on its way to Stockport where it meets the Goyt in a confluence that marks the start of the river Mersey.
