He started out in metallurgy, as a researcher in precious metals. The close experience of his aunt with cancer highlighted the powerful benefit of alternative therapies. This led Richard to training in acupuncture, studying partly in China and running a practice for ten years. Then his involvement in a long but successful legal action against a bank led him to obtain a degree in law. The case revealed how an institution, even a bank, may owe a duty of care to its customers. It became an important legal case and was studied worldwide.
Being part of a high profile legal case gave Richard a brief exposure to publicity.
