In 1983 Rufus Reade traveled some 12000 miles round some of the remotest corners of Turkey with a small pot of money and an eye for beautiful objects. He returned with his first bale of rugs and kilims and 'Out of the Nomads Tent' was born. In the early years rugs, kilims and various kinds of artefacts were exhibited in Rufus' own home in Edinburgh as well in the private homes of friends which known as 'Nomads Tent Road Shows. These very popular 'Road Shows' continue to this day all over the UK.
Rufus Reade set up shop in 1983 after a 12000 mile journey round Turkey exploring and purchasing kilims and rugs. The business has since diversified into furniture, textiles, home artefacts, and jewellery. We source most of our goods directly from Iran, Turkey, India and other countries with authentic nomadic, tribal and village crafts.
Each year we put on several exhibitions and non commercial events such as an annual symposium in the warehouse, as well as our ‘pop-up' travelling exhibitions around the UK.
