I am a professional member of the Acupuncture Society (MAS) which means I have trained full-time for at least three years on a degree course that emphasised safety and extensive knowledge of both Chinese and Western Medicine. Having undertaken further training at the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre I am part of their Complementary Therapy Network (CTN) of professionally registered and experienced therapists, who use their skills to work with people affected by cancer.
For thousands of years acupuncture has been used to improve the well-being of millions of people. Having stood the test of time we find it is still relevant today, not just in China where it features alongside mainstream conventional medicine, but also here in the West. As part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture aims to restore and maintain health through the stimulation of specific points in the body. People often come to acupuncture with specific symptoms or to relieve specific conditions such as nausea, osteoarthritis or back pain.
Some have stress related heath problems such as insomnia, panic attacks or blood pressure. Others use acupuncture because they feel tired, unwell or 'out of sorts' but have no medical diagnosis. Since acupuncture is a holistic therapy it works to re-balance body, mind and spirit, which in turn stimulates the body's own healing responses. Acupuncture is increasingly used to assist fertility and prepare for pregnancy.
