I was one of the first UK photographers to develop this style of wedding photography back in the late 1990′s. At that point I had been working as a newspaper photojournalist and wanted to photograph a wedding as a story in photographs rather than the usual style of that time which involved setting up all the wedding photographs in rigid poses. There was at this time only a couple of other photographers in the country working in this way.
At first I mixed some press work with weddings but within a year I was so busy with weddings I left press work behind for good. During my press days I had photographed everybody who was anybody, including spending a day with Tony Blair on his election campaign before he became Prime Minister, flying around in helicopters with the British Army in Germany, photographing HM The Queen on Royal Visits, photographing rock stars like Belinda Carlisle, as well as more mundane work like taking photographs for the financial pages of national newspapers. I found weddings gave me a lot of creative freedom and the ability to work in my first love, black and white.
