I have always regarded drawing as the seminal process from which all art forms grow. Drawing as mark making is an intrinsic part of being human; everybody does it but developing a language of drawing and painting that can express feelings and emotional responses is one of my aims.
My paintings are concerned with landscape, both in broad expanse and in close up detail and express both the dramatic and subtle ways in which light transforms a subject. A recurring theme in my work is the depiction of water, as it provides a consistent challenge. In the seascapes I try to portray the feelings of being exposed to the power of the elements. Moving water and things moving within water provide a much more complex variety of visual responses. In contrast to this, painting still water introduces a different set of challenges where objects float or are suspended within degrees of transparency and where depth could be unfathomable.I currently live in Barton-under-Needwood and paint from my studio at ‘Ridware Arts’, Hamstall Ridware. In 1985 I received a first class honours degree in Fine Art from De Montfort University. In April 2011 I was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI). Elected to the RI Council in 2014, in April I 2016 founded 'fRIends of the RI' and in 2017 was elected Friends Secretary. In 2016 I was elected an associate member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, (ARSMA) and in October 2018 elected to full membership, (RSMA).
