Nick Gearing started working for his fathers company in 1989 managing a small shrub growing nursery. After two years was transferred to the garden maintenance department where he led a maintenance crew for seven years, gaining experience in domestic & commercial garden care, hard landscaping and people management. During the summer of 1997 he decided to start his own business & purchased a mower & some tools using a credit card. With only one regular customer Nick left secure employment & started visiting sites all over Stevenage & the surrounding areas to try to create a customer base.
In a Ford Fiesta, no overdraft, and much hard work, the business quickly developed a customer base of over 80 clients & was able to support the business for its first and most vulnerable year. During the second year Nick purchased a small van & rented a trailer. After just one month the van broke down beyond repair, leaving a thriving new business with no transport or financial resources.
