Messydesk Cakes Cards and Crafts is owned and run by Debra Findlay - in fact, as a sole trader I do everything including meeting customers, doing the shopping, making and decorating the cakes, creating all the stationery, washing up etc! I work from home in my kitchen which has been approved for food preparation purposes by Fife Council's Environmental Health department.
In a previous life I used to be a Maths teacher but gave up full-time work when I became a mum 10 years ago. I was already very interested in cardmaking and crafts, and became interested in cake decorating through the ever more fancy designs of train cakes my son would require for his birthdays. Friends and relatives then started asking me to make cakes for them, or perhaps invitations for special events, then it grew to friends of friends and before I knew it I had registered as self-employed and got myself a small business.
