Negative emotions are inbuilt into all of us as means of survival, helping to warn us imminent danger or threat. When these emotions are in balance, we remain mentally healthy. When our emotions begin to mis-fire, usually as a result of multiple stressors, mental health problems can emerge and we can become stuck in a vicious cycle.

I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology in 1992. Following this, I completed a PhD with the Medical Research Council and, having worked for the World Health Organisation for two years, undertook my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Edinburgh, qualifying in 2000. I worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings within the NHS and have worked independently for the past eight years.

Provision of psychological therapy takes up approximately 80% of my working time. Referrals come from GPs, Psychiatrists, Health Insurers and Lawyers and therapy includes treatment of multiple conditions, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, complex grief responses, somatisation disorders and traumatic brain injury. I am fully trained in several evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
