Jonas arrived in Britain in 1867 and became a British citizen in 1876, in which time he earned a reputation as a noted industrialist and philanthropist. On top of his contributions to many other local charities and institutions, Jonas was also a valued benefactor to the newly formed University of Sheffield. By achieving the post of Lord Mayor in 1904 as well as being rewarded with a knighthood, he had reached the pinnacle of local civic life. He was one of Sheffield's leading figures at the turn of the twentieth century.
