Brickwork is tough and durable, but it is continuously exposed to the elements and over time the mortar that holds the bricks together and even the bricks themselves will start to wear and crumble. Wind and rain erode the mortar, water gets inside, icy temperatures will cause the water to freeze and the pointing mortar will crack, patches of pointing will blow. Potentially damp to penetrate into your buildings substrate — the weather can have any number of consequences for your brickwork.

After leaving school in 1986 I applied for and was successful in securing an apprenticeship with a local brickwork company. I was taught, from the bottom upwards, the skills and methods used and in the period from 1987-1990 I attended Waltham Forest College on weekly day release to obtain a recognised qualification in brickwork. Upon completion of a three year study I received 2 Distinctions and 1 Credit at City and Guilds Standard, in Brickwork Theory, Technical Drawing and Practical Methods.
