My enthusiasm for building started with my dad who had a successful building business himself. I frequently assisted him during school holidays, constructing and repairing old buildings throughout Dorset. After completing my bricklaying, concreting courses and stonemasonry certificate in the Building Crafts Training School, London. I then joined the army's Royal Engineers for 4 years working in Germany, Canada, Denmark and Northern Ireland keeping the peace. This is where I also completed my Advanced Bricklaying Course.

In 1983 I created R.L.Bowring my own building company; early jobs were repairing churches, wall repairs, new extensions and cottage upgrades. The big storms in 1988 led to many roof renewals and repairs. We have carried out works on various modern and historic buildings including fixing the glass panels into the stonework of the Great West Window and the repair of the Monks washing house, Sherborne Abbey.
