In addition, Althams were well known as Tea Merchants, having their own five brands of tea, all blended and packed under the Althams’ label. Customers buying the best brands were given tea cheques valued at 2d, 4d or 1/~. In later years, 2/6d and 5/~ tea cheques were added to the range: these tea cheques could be put towards the cost of Rail tickets which were sold in many of our branches as early as 1876. From 1876, Althams used to run their own Railway Excursions from Lancashire and Yorkshire towns to seaside resorts on the West Coast. From 1944, the Company’s name was changed to ‘Althams Stores Limited’ and over the years a small number of self contained Travel Offices were opened in local towns such as Accrington, Burnley, Bury, Halifax and Nelson. The majority of the stores had a travel counter, but up to the early 1960’s the Travel Department was still the ‘poor relation’ of the Company.
