Alan Johns

Alan - a craftsman watch and clock maker - was born in Truro and went to Redruth Grammar School. On leaving school he started in the jewellery trade as an apprentice to J Pearson and Son Jewellers in Boscawen Street, Truro. He won £25 - a month's wages - when he was awarded the Arthur Tremayne prize for the best apprentice of the year. From 1976 he managed Gudridge and Son Jewellers at Perranporth and then owned it from 1987.

In 1984 Alan studied in Japan and Switzerland as a Churchill Fellow. He is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute, until retirement a Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers and a past member of the National Association of Goldsmiths.
